The Spreadsheet Can Wait. The Thinking Can't.

The Spreadsheet Can Wait. The Thinking Can't.

Most agencies burn weeks assembling numbers, and by the time the plan lands the thinking time is gone. The hard part was never the budget; it's figuring out where the brand is, where it needs to be in twelve months, and how to close the gap. Brands that wait until Q4 start slow, get ideas off the ground only at the tail end of Q1, then sprint all year instead of pacing a marathon. Start the strategic thinking now, get clear on the mission before the tactics, and build in room to respond.

The numbers are easy; the strategic thinking is what takes time, and if you wait for Q4 you'll spend next year catching up.

Most agencies spend weeks getting numbers together. By the time they hand it to you, the thinking time is already gone.

The Numbers Aren't the Hard Part

The numbers should be easy.

What takes time is figuring out where the brand is, where you want it to go, and how you're gonna get there.

If you haven't started that thinking yet, before you know it it will be the end of the year and you won't have everything locked and loaded.

What Waiting Until Q4 Actually Costs

Brands that wait until Q4 face a slow start to the year.

Ideas don't get off the ground until the tail end of Q1, and then they spend the whole year sprinting instead of running the marathon at a nice comfortable pace where you do have that room to think and respond and be thoughtful.

For launches especially, there is no space for time to be wasted.

So Here's What Actually Matters

  1. Start the strategic thinking now. Not the budget spreadsheet. The thinking. Where is the brand today? Where does it need to be in 12 months? What's the gap?

  2. Get clear on the mission before you get clear on the tactics. If you don't know what you're trying to accomplish, the tactics won't matter.

  3. Build in room to respond. The brands that win aren't the ones with the perfect plan. They're the ones with enough breathing room to adjust when the market moves.

The spreadsheet can wait. The thinking can't.

If you're waiting for Q4 to start planning, you're not planning for next year. You're planning to spend next year catching up.
