A CCO asked me last week when she should actually start thinking about her 2027 brand plan. Not the budget. Not the media calendar. The actual thinking: the positioning, the message, the plan underneath the plan. She wanted to know if she was already behind.
She wasn't. But she was about to make the mistake I watch almost every biotech and life sciences team make this time of year. Wait for a full quarter to open up before starting, then discover there isn't one.
This is the first article in a short series on brand planning for 2027. Before we get into tactics, I want to answer the question she actually asked. When does this season really start, and how long does the traditional process actually take once you're in it.
When Brand Planning Season Actually Starts
I didn't want to guess at this, so I checked. Multiple B2B planning guides point to the same general window: companies typically start their annual marketing and brand planning process two to four months ahead of the next fiscal year or launch date. That most commonly lands somewhere between August and October. Some organizations following a standard calendar year are told to begin two to three months out, which puts them squarely in October.
There isn't one universal start date, and I'm not going to pretend there is. But here's what that range means in practice. If you haven't started your 2027 thinking yet, you are not late. You are early or right on time for most of the market. The teams who wait until Q4 to start are the ones who end up scrambling into January.
Why the Traditional Agency Timeline Makes This Worse
Here's the part that actually costs people time. Industry sources on the traditional branding and brand strategy process put a full agency engagement at eight to sixteen weeks from discovery to launch, and some describe engagements running anywhere from four weeks to well over a year depending on scope and how many rounds of review a plan has to clear. Research alone can eat one to three weeks. Strategy development, another one to three. Then the review cycles start.
That math is the actual problem. Your planning season is already a tight two to four month window. If your agency's process alone can eat sixteen weeks of it, you are out of runway before the plan ever reaches your board.
What We Do Differently
We built FutureNova Health around a different set of assumptions. Fewer layers, not more process for its own sake.
Pricing and overhead. We run without the layers a bigger agency carries on your invoice. Less overhead on your bill means more of your budget goes to the work itself.
Timeline. Our launch cycles run around nine weeks against an industry standard we've seen run twenty-plus weeks. That's an internal benchmark from our own engagements, not a third-party study, and I'll say that plainly every time I cite it.
Compliance. Built into the plan from day one, not bolted on after the creative is already built and has to get torn apart in a review meeting. More on exactly what that costs you later in this series.
Starting Early Doesn't Fix a Broken Process
Starting early helps. It buys you room. But starting early with the same sixteen-week process just moves the same collision further down the calendar. The teams who actually win 2027 aren't the ones who started first. They're the ones whose process was built to move at the speed the calendar actually gives them.
Over the next few weeks we're publishing the rest of this series: why the thinking is the part you can't compress even when the spreadsheet is easy, what actually happens when a plan built to impress hits a compliance review instead of a plan built to work, and the five questions you need to be able to answer by Labor Day if you want to be steering your 2027 plan instead of just approving invoices for it.
If you want to start now without committing to a full engagement, that's what Test Flight is for. It's a risk-free, application-based way to run a real strategy and creative checkpoint with us before anything larger gets signed.
